To be ISO 9001 qualified, a vendor must have a quality management system in place, including methods for verifying product quality and a system for dealing with potential customer problems. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) monitors compliance with ISO 9001.

API Q1 is set by the American Petroleum Institute and stipulates the requirements for consistent and reliable manufacturing of API–certified products. To be certified as API Q1, manufacturers must submit a quality manual and undergo an internal audit. After being certified, vendors can apply the API monogram to their end products. Customers can be confident that the API–approved products they purchase are of the highest quality. ISO and API standards overlap to a large extent, leading to dual certification for certain products.
